doubt is not okay

Doubt is Not Okay

Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of preachers saying that doubt is okay. Now, their point is probably valid – I haven’t watched all of their sermons and maybe they’re just saying that God won’t punish us for doubting, which I believe is true. And yes, God can “handle” our doubts (I hear that from preachers a lot) and I think what they mean by those words is that God isn’t thrown off when we doubt Him, which is also true because He already knew that we would doubt Him and when. However, nowhere in the Bible does it say that doubt is okay. In fact, God’s Word says the exact opposite.

Being Double-Minded

I think James said it best in James 1:6-8

But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

God’s Word is pretty clear that if we want to receive anything from the Lord – an answer to promise, deliverance from debt, healing of an illness, etc. – we must believe and not doubt. When we doubt we are being double-minded because you can’t trust in God and doubt Him at the same time. And when we’re double-minded James says clearly that we shouldn’t expect to receive anything from the Lord. So, if we’re asking God for something and we start to doubt, we have to immediately repent and get rid of those doubts, turning doubt into faith and trusting in the Lord. Otherwise, we are assured that we’ll never receive what we’ve asked for because we’re double-minded. God doesn’t work through doubt, He works through faith.

Moving Mountains

Jesus said the same thing in Mark 11:23.

“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.”

We have the same Holy Spirit that Jesus had when He walked the earth and He promises that if we have faith and truly believe for whatever we’re asking from God, we will receive it. But, we can’t doubt in our hearts. The moment we doubt, we know it won’t happen.

Now, I’m not saying that if you feel a moment of doubt then you’re done, God will never answer your prayer now. No, He is more forgiving and merciful than that. But if we continue to doubt, if we don’t repent and turn away from it the moment we realize we’re doing it, God isn’t going to work in our lives. We will never receive that for which we are believing if we don’t have faith and truly trust that God is going to bring it to us in His perfect timing. When we continue in doubt, it blocks God from working in our lives.

Lack of Faith

If you still don’t believe me, check out what Jesus did when He walked on the earth. Remember how almost every person He healed (at least those that were specifically recorded in the Gospels) Jesus would ask about their faith, “Do you believe I can do this?” or would say something like, “Go, your faith has healed you.” But, when Jesus returned to His hometown to perform miracles, the people couldn’t see past the Jesus they’d known as He was growing up. They didn’t see Him as the Son of God but as the son of Joseph and Mary. The Bible says in Mark 6:5-6

He could not do any miracles there, except lay His hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

He could not do any miracles because of their lack of faith. Jesus Himself, the Son of God, God in the flesh, could not do miracles in the lives of the people who lacked faith (doubted) in what He could do. The same is true today, beloved readers. When we lack faith, if Jesus is amazed at our unbelief, He isn’t going to work in our lives. The more we doubt, the more we can be assured that we will never receive anything we ask from God.

Do Not Doubt

However, the great thing is that the opposite is true too! The more we believe, the more we walk and talk in faith, the more God can and will do in our lives! Go back to Mark 11:23

“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.”

When we believe and don’t doubt, God will do anything we ask of Him (that’s in His will)! Jesus said in John 14:12-14

Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in Me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in My name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask Me for anything in My name, and I will do it.

Those are powerful words, beloved! Jesus promises that He will do anything we ask in His name! But the key is that we have to believe and not doubt. But, when we walk in faith, trusting that what we’ve asked of Him, God will do, we can know without doubt that He will deliver!

God is good and He is faithful. What He has promised, He will do. Jesus didn’t make that promise lightly. He knew exactly what He was saying and He meant it for us, not just for the 12 disciples. So, I challenge you today, dear reader, to trust God. Ask great things, sun-stand-still kind of things, mountain-moving things, and see what God can do for you and through you!

Praise be to the name of the great and mighty God, King of kings and Lord of lords!

Well said! As believers and followers of Jesus Christ we do have to make up our minds if all the Bible is true or not……..which it is. His Word is the only Truth there is! So when those doubts come then rebuke them because it is the enemy trying to trip you up once again. God says it that’s enough for me! And, if you still have doubts or unbelief ask the Lord to help you not to doubt. Say what the Word says not what your doubts may be. God is always faithful, always trustworthy and He is love!
